Faces are Overrated...

... as are words.

Isn't their specificity, void of facial expression, remarkable?

Name all of them and get a faceless prize.

I've got no idea except that the middle-ish two look like Whistlers and that bookshelf is one I've been in love with at Ikea for years and it's never been practical for any of my houses. (Or available in the U.S. when it was.)

Great series of posts this week. Hope when you go away you will still be blogging. You're on roll here.

I must see this Ikea bookcase! Do you recall the name?

They must have copied the design, as the painting is by Vilhelm Hammershøi, and about 110 years old.

And thanks for the compliment -- I am unsure if I'll be able to blog, but if I can, I will.

I don't know the photos but the paintings are Hammershois and Casper David Friedrichs (and no, I'm not trying to win a prize) I love all those paintings. So few people seem to know Hammershoi. That girl by CDF looking out the window was used on the cover of Penguin ed. of Eugenie Grandet, one of my fave books.

The girl is by Gerhard Richter. It's his daughter I think? They're all wonderful. (My mother had a Hammershoi calendar--so quiet. I'm glad she doesn't ever throw things away.)

Yes, yes and yes. Richter, Hammershoi, Friedrichs, and one more ...

Well, I've never seen those photos before, but they look like Ryan McGinley. Isn't that Richter portrait wonderful? I saw it in person at the St. Louis Art Museum and it was so exquisite; something about the size was unexpected (it was neither large nor small), and it was displayed next to an enormous textural black piece the size of a wall. So beautiful.

Thanks for commenting on Nick Haus! I look forward to seeing what you have to say. Unfortunately, I had to stop taking Anonymous comments -- too much spam, too much vituperative. Come out from behind the curtain, ye nasty Anonymous! Everyone else, please, I love to hear from you.
